Toyota Tundra Pulls Space Shuttle Endeavour

It is offical, the Toyota Tundra pulled the Space Shuttle Endeavour across the Manchester Bridge on the last leg of its journey to the California Science Center. It is here the Endeavor will go on permanent display.

The Space Shuttle Endeavor is one of the retired orbiters of the Space Shuttle program of NASA. It was the fifth and final space-worthy NASA space shuttle to be built. It was constructed to replace the Challenger. Its first mission was in May 1992 and last mission was in May 2011.

The Endeavour Space Shuttle has travelled a total of 12 miles from Los Angeles International Airport on city streets, to the Science Center.

The 2012 Toyota Tundra underwent extensive testing to ensure it was able to tow the 300,000 lb historic artifact. The exact model used for this once-in-a-lifetime trip, is a stock 2012 Toyota Tundra CrewMax ½ ton. This model is exactly what you see on the lot at Gateway Toyota. There are no additional modifications made to increase the towing capacity or to generate more power. Talk about raw power that can handle any job off the lot.

The Endeavor Tundra is equipped with a high performance 5.7L V8 engine that generates 380 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, which has a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. The Tundra towed 282,000 lbs over its maximum rated capacity. A heavy lifting doll was specially designed for hauling the Endeavor. This is one of the biggest towing challenges the Tundra has ever done.

This project is an effort to provide support and awareness of the space program and continuing education of the public through exhibits and programs. Space travel has been a major feat in human history. It is important to honour this achievement.

Live information can be viewed at The Tundra Endeavor live site put on by the TMS, SSLA and Science Centre.
