Prairie Toyota Fuels Three-Week Food Drive to Restock Canada’s Food Bank Shelves for the New Year!

(December 10, 2012) – Throughout the holiday season there is a tremendous public push to donate to local food banks. What people may not realize is at the start of the new year — supplies at Canada’s food banks are at its lowest. According to the St. Albert Food Bank, due to a significant drop in donations (food and cash) following the holidays, food banks face their lowest supply levels from January – April.

To ensure a good start to 2013, Prairie Toyota dealers want to replenish and restock local food banks after the holiday rush. Local dealers are asking their community to bring in a non-perishable food item from now until January 2 to their dealerships. Each dealership will kick-off the food drive with a donation of $550 worth of groceries.

According to Food Banks Canada, each month close to 900,000 Canadians are assisted by food banks (a 2.4% increase over 2011) and 38% of those helped are children and youth.

Consider these figures from Food Banks Canada’s Hunger Count 2012:

  •  55% of food banks needed to cut back on the amount of food provided to each household due to supply shortages
  •  14% of food banks ran out of food at some point in the past year

Toyota dealers are asking for support in this initiative. “We really want to bring our community together; raise awareness of the need to restock our food bank’s supplies and drive people to donate just one more item.” said {SPOKESPERSON}. “Let’s not only feed our citizens who are in need during the holiday, but ensure we’re continuing to provide enough food supplies for the start of the new year and throughout.”  Those who donate during the promotion can enter for a chance to win a 2013 Corolla CE Convenience package.
